Speaking of the list of popularity...
This 'morphic' image below is very next on the list. Other entries fell way behind.
So the first one above was obviously sport, the next classic, and the last below is futuristic. All have practical enclosed bodies. However, the door entries are a bit more challenged. What do you think? How did Elio match up to Sport, Classic, Futuristic and practical door entry?

PS, there are a lot more types than just 'Pigeon hole engineers'. Also add artists and theorists and technologists. But all of them do have my respect if they value what others have to offer, and remain optimistic about the application of effort.
Even constructive criticism is highly useful.

(I admit, the classic is also coinciding with a fantasy genre that is popular on that web-source right now, so that muddles the assessment a bit.)

Door entry would be tough in all but the classic. Most of us who can afford the toys don't want to have to do gymnastics to enter/exit their toys. One of the things I like about the Elio is that it uses standard door entry and no odd lifting-canopy or large step over. I suppose conservative engineers have to start somewhere and to make the vehicle practical, it has to be able to be entered by a person. If the goal was to build strictly for speed or efficience, the entrance can be wherever. I haven't seen a rear entry car yet though. I mean, why haven't we seen a van with no side doors and the way to exit is through the rear. You could avoid door handles, door seams, etc... Maybe a two seater where the two seats pivot inward to allow exit from the rear. You couldn't exactly back into a parking spot but it sure would make the A and B pillars an interesting engineering exercise.

I like how you can think out of the box.
Yes, I've never seen a pragmatic way to do a rear door on a 2F1R. And usually a 1F2R has the engine back there. Most likely only some kind of 2F2R van/bus could sensibly use that as the only entry. But, as you know, it's only been an optional entry in the case of vans and buses.
The fact that riders like to face forward, feet are best to be near to the door, and seats have fixed backs, pretty much kills that one off.

I only just barely talked myself into the 'getting out of the bathtub' paradigm for the Atlantric. And so I consider the potential customer base to be very small for it.
(Agreed-) If the car is very tasty, only sports or other enthusiasts might accept such features.

Hey, back in the 70s, we had a van with captains chairs. They pivoted so you could face wherever you wanted. If there wasn't cargo behind the seat, you could turn around and walk right out the back. If you didn't have a gas tank or spare under the floor, the van could step down to be very close to the ground and make it easy to step out in style. Hey, if the back doors had an upper part that opened outwards, you could have the upper fold become a roof, the doors become defacto walls and you could walk out, put up your umbrella, and walk out like a champ!

So, I've noted an interesting trend, I've posted images of autocycle styles (solo or tandem seating) on the Pinterest web site, just to see what people respond to.

These are the two most popular, likely for different reasons.

I like the silver one. Reminds me of a Starfighter (F104?) Favourite plane when I was a kid.
