Okay folks. I don't know how the rest of ya'll drive your vehicles, but I fly by VFR (visual flight rules), and rarely check the instruments while I'm on the road...unless "Johnny Law" shows up on my radar. My eyes are on the road, road hazards [debris] and the idiots around me (yes, I assume they are/you are [no offense] all idiots and out to get me!). It's served me well, and saved my ass more than a few times. If you're "freaking out" over a tach and speedo [I'm more concerned about engine temp and oil pressure], that may or may not be difficult to read, or the design of which makes you so sick to look at that you can't focus on the 'task at hand', then please DO NOT drive your Elio in a 50 mile radius of the St. Louis, MO metro area...you're way to distracted over silly crap, and a danger to myself and others...you might as well be texting and driving while drunk.

Here's a little saying that may help if you're losing sleep over this topic. ;)

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change [The Elio's coming with an Elgin dash, get over it].
The courage to change the things I can [If you can afford a replacement that's acceptable to you...do it!]
And the wisdom to know the difference [If you can't afford to swap the dash...refer back to the first sentence].

Well. I've got "everybody and their cousin" coming to my house in a few hours for Christmas Eve, and need to help the wife prep for the 'chaos' and run to the store to pick up a few things. If I don't get back to the site today, I wish everyone a very merry Christmas! :D

OH, you mean the people who have seen photographs, but have not seen the end result actually working but just must go on attack anyway.
I don't like it for the reasons plainly stated -- in addition to it's being a matter of taste. I should be experiencing the delightful Elgin dash in a couple of weeks. And if I'm wrong, I will say so. I don't attack for the fun of it. And I don't sneer at other members whose opinions are different than my own. I just invite you to justify your preference, and if you think I'm in error, point out where the error lies. If you can't do that, then hold your peace.

Thanks to those who know something about design and communicating graphic information. I have grown to like the Elgin dash design, but now I discover that it's not providing functional information and will be so difficult to read that I may have to reconsider the Elio as my commuter of choice. First time the dash has played a role in whether or not I buy a vehicle. Replacing the dash with a non-factory alternative is not an option for me.
I bet five bucks it isn't a determining factor you. But if it is, I'll pay up -- and you'll be missed here. Surely you wouldn't be so hypocritical as to stay in an elio owners' forum when you don't intend to own an Elio, now would you? Nah ....

The fact that the Elgin dash has created so much controversy and passion should tell Elio that they should take a second look at their decision to use it.

"The secret to failure in a business is to sell only what "you" like." ( An old saying I just made up.)

.... and for those newbies who may have missed it, here's the Elgin dash in action: Look at the video first without the sound so you are not influenced and can make up your own mind.

If you don't use your cell phone a lot, there is a great deal through Consumer Cellular. I get the basic plan and it's $35 a month (plus tax) for two lines of service, no contract, and you can change your plan at any time. If you get a plan with higher allowances that you won't use for the month, they don't charge you for the unused time; they only charge for what you use. I've had the plan for almost 2 years and have never had a problem. I used to be a Verizon user but never again after the way they treated me (but I hear they abuse all their customers).
I need to keep this in mind, if I can ever get my two kids to vacate the house. I have 4 lines with AT&T.

I can live with it. Probably difficult to set cruise to say 62, 72 mph. I could use my TomTom to get actual mph when I have it with me.

There are multiple things to dislike about that dash. The uninformative speedo is first, of course -- numbers indexed too widely for accurate interpolation, requires de-coding (position is easier to read than numbers, which is why gauges with needles are so successful). There's a reason watches with hands predominate, though read-outs have been around for 40 years. The Elgin dash is also mechanical, and so prone to failure...

I always look at the number? Maybe that's why I like the Elgin; in a normal speedo my brain takes three steps to check speed.
1) Where is needle located?
2) Which number is needle pointed most close to?
3) Estimate distance between needle and closest numbers to approximate MPH reading.

In the Leaf, which has a digital display, it just shows me the precise MPH in a big glowing number, which makes me happy and reduces brain cycles.

Thus, the Elgin is a happy medium: the number is always going to be in the same spot, I just gotta do the estimation calculation.

Where did you find out "it's not providing functional information and will be so difficult to read" ?

Did I say I had a preference? No, but I will wait to pass judgment until I actually see the finished product in action......
