I had the opportunity to take another ride in a SMART yesterday. Both Intersate and urban driving were experienced.

It was not so bad as I had recalled. The anology which I would use to describe the activities of the AMT is would be that it's operation is akin to a new driver who has been just recently intoduced to a manual transmission, without the grinding of gears or stalling of engine due to poor clutch feathering. The new driver has been taught where to put the lever, but is just not real sure, and take a moment to think about it. After convincing his/her self that the selector has been put in the correct position, then the clutch is engaged.

It gets the job done, but is not as smooth as a polished ballroom dancer.

Your description is right on. What year smart was it? I have heard that the newer ones are better than the older ones. Mine is a "08". It has had one program update and it did improve the shift. A lot of shift quality comes from the driver and how he operates the gas pedal. If the driver lifts off the gas pedal just before the shift you will get a much smother shift. Probably no faster just smoother.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. The SMART in which I was riding was a 2012.

I have an 09 smart and it is as described above. I will only get an AMT if the operation is improved over my smart.
