Retirement is for those that have Lots of Money and Good Health .... then it's great. Other than that it sucks.
When I was in business I use to hate hearing retired people tell me they were on a fixed income and take it easy on them when all the time they were in a new vehicle, lived in a 200K home and had 80K or more coming in.

What was your Job in the Army, Smitty. Was or is your replacement or outside job related to your Army Job. I have son similarly looking to retire.
I was infantry 11B no real outside world cross over that is legal anyway. Making Bad axx videos on the internet was not for me.
I stepped in to a different world that had nothing to do with the Army . However Skills developed in the Army opened the door for me. Once that door opened. The ability to get things done, to organize, leadership all came into play.
My oldest son has his 20 in and second son has 19 in. Second son became 1SG in a company I was once 1SG in two weeks ago. Time goes by fast.
Industry is always looking for well organized leaders that can over come the BS and get things done. Not all retired military can do it, but for some skills leaner over many years are of high value to business today. So many coming out of colleges bring nothing to the table.
I wish your son the best. Step boldly into the new world they are looking for him.
My current contact is an at will deal either can end it with a simple phone call . I have the number handy.

I'm sure, like you probably agree, that the large majority of collage Grads actually do demonstrate a higher degree of discipline than non-grads. Like everything else it's the exceptions that stand out in our minds or our memories. Point in question; I grew up in the 60s and 70s. I've always taken great issues as to the supposed Columbia educated media types (national liberal media types) portraying that era as the hippies and anti war generation. The huge majority of us from that era, I'm sure, take great issue with that portrayal. Though most Grads do achieve one would or should take exception that far too many are skipping out into the world with no experience expecting the the world to bow at their feet. The best credential I look for is in hiring is a good and teachable attitude. Personally I think the Big O is due a refund and reparations from those who educated him.

Great post Jim and I am glad you are enjoying life, however at the other end of the spectrum I enjoy working, I have worked around all types of drilling from laborer to drilling fluid enginneer I am currently working in California on water well projects, I from utah but love to see the farms here in California!, I just turned 30 and I am hoping to Get married soon and start a family I look forward to years of hard work and spending spare time with family! When driving to work it's so nice to see the sunrise and makes my day every day I hope when the time comes I also enjoy retirement as much as you, but I want to pay cash for my elio and then buy a powered parachute for my next toy so everyday at work I make the most of it and enjoy as much as possible!! What a great ride the roller coaster of life is!

absolutely, what is right for one person may or may not be right for the next .... my father was a product of the great depression .... dad worked .... he worked every day .... we still believe that the day mom convinced him to close his real estate office and stay home was the day he started going down hill .... in that regard, he and I are clearly not cut from the pattern .... one month from today we hope to leave home traveling in our camper that will take us halfway cross country, covering 4,000+ miles, and last until mid August .... I could still be working in my last career (RV sales) which I thoroughly enjoyed but for me, it was time to move on

We kept actively farming 8 years long than we had planned. It kept Grandpa a live an extra 8 years without work to do he would have died much sooner.
Even if it was not much he had to be working in one way or another.
