Hi everyone,

So, I'm that guy who LOVES everything about this car, but has all the reasons in the world not to commit to it yet, and I feel bad about it.

I'll be changing jobs which requires a 500+ mile move to NC around August 1. I make...not spectacular money, and while the new job will include a mild pay increase, I have bad credit from lingering student loans, credit crunch fiascoes, etc. Money is tight for me, more because of existing debt payments than my actual income level.

However, the fiancée and I will need two vehicles. Right now we have two, but one is on its last leg and will not make the journey. It'll be sold to fund part of the move. Elio is perfect for a replacement -- it's cheap, there are payment options, it's efficient -- exactly what someone in my position needs.

I don't have a reservation yet -- right now every spare bit of cash is going into the moving fund. Praying that reservations will stay open at least until August!

Welcome to the forum.
As a NC resident for the past 15 years I have 3 pieces of advice.
(1) Don't live east of I-95 unless you like evacuating due to hurricanes several times a year.
(2) Before you get a house, if it's not on a hill, check the 500yr flood predictions for the area - we've had multiple 100yr floods since I moved here but no 500yr ones yet.
(3) Raleigh, Charlotte, and Asheville areas are the best parts of the state to live in, however Raleigh and Charlotte both have traffic jams from hell.
[edit] A bonus (4) Don't move here if you have school age children, the education system here is absolutely fucking piss poor! We used to be among the best in the country, the Republicans took over all 3 branches of the government, defunded the educational system and it has collapsed with the good teachers all fleeing for other states.

Hi and welcome from Oregon, Roddy. I haven't lived in NC since 1965 I can't give you any advice there. I had moved to Raleigh from the west and felt like I was in a green prison. No horizons. No matter where you looked, all you saw was trees. I never did adjust to the heat or the humidity so I was very happy to leave there and move to Austin, TX. I am one of the low income people the Elio is designed for. My car is not a junker because it is a Toyota Camry but it is a 1999 and has over 215,000 miles on it. What it isn't is fun. LOL I found once I made the $100 all in commitment I had more money. Not from getting more income but from managing my income better. It is almost as if making that decision and commitment opened my eyes and mind to new ways to stretch my budget further. I tell you this not to give you advice other than to suggest you not give up. Look for little expenses that can quietly add up. So even though I said I wasn't going to give you advice I did. What can I say, I am a mother and that is what mothers do. They butt in where not needed or wanted. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this forum. There is lots of information written and shared by a very interesting and eclectic membership. There are great pictures, stories and videos. All kinds of ideas of what to do with the Elio once in hand are shared and discussed. So enjoy the adventure of this journey to Elio ownership. You too can become and Elio member so remember that. If you believe it can happen it will. (Darn, there I go dispensing advice again! Slap my hand! It typed all that without my permission! Honest) LOL :-) Z

Welcome Roddy. Don't sweat it to much. When the Elio comes out it will help your transportation problems and you don't have to have a reservation to get one unless you must have one of the first.

Thanks for the advice. Funny you should mention the schools - I'm actually coming to NC because of the education stuff. I'm a teacher, and Ohio is worse in my content area, and just for teachers in general. Our recent changes to teacher evaluations, merit pay, and so forth are awful. You'll see the same flight from Ohio soon. NC currently has the advantage on pay, licensure requirements, and availability of jobs in my content area. I'm not above jumping ship in a few years if needed though. :)

Well, we definitely have availability of jobs due to all of the jumping of ships in the past few years. The education budget just got cut but another half billion dollars this year and there are many newspaper articles about teachers now having to go on Medicare.

But, good luck, it's sad that there's a worse place to jump ship from where NC looks good.
