Dear Friends,

Does anybody happen to know if the State of Maryland
will require a FRONT LICENSE PLATE for our Elio vehicles?

I previously posted this in an existing thread by accident.
Hopefully more persons will see it here.

Please Advise!

Dear Friend W. Willie,

You were very kind to reply, but you obviously have never tried to contact the Motor Vehicle Administration of Maryland (MVA).

LOL....

Yes, I will resume my calls on Tuesday. At this time I have been unable to find any person at the Maryland MVA that could
answer this question. Perhaps some more patient person will have far better luck than I have....

Thank You,

I've lived in Maryland for 20 years and gone through a dozen vehicles and always found the MVA to be helpful. Whenever I've had questions I just call the 800 number and generally get the right answer in a timely fashion.

That said, you can be sure of getting the right answer by looking at the law itself. Maryland's source of law is the "Code of Maryland" (<-- link), the statutes the politicians write and vote on and the Governor signs into law.

To determine what kind of vehicle Maryland defines the Elio as, I just have to find the right section:
http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/f...n=11-136&ext=html&session=2015RS&tab=subject5
Code:
§11–136.
  (a) “Motorcycle” means a motor vehicle that:
    (1) Has motive power;
    (2) Has a seat or saddle for the use of the rider;
    (3) Is designed to travel:
      (i) On not more than three wheels in contact with the ground; and
      (ii) At speeds exceeding 35 miles per hour; and
    (4) Is of a type required to comply with all motor vehicle safety standards applicable to motorcycles under federal law.
Then, the bit about display of license plates on motorcycles:
http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/f...n=13-410&ext=html&session=2015RS&tab=subject5
Code:
§13–410.
(a) (1) Except as otherwise provided in this title, when it registers a vehicle, the Administration shall issue to the owner:
        (i) One registration plate, if the vehicle is a Class D (motorcycle) vehicle, Class F (tractor) vehicle, or Class G (trailer) vehicle; and
        (ii) Two registration plates for every other vehicle.

Just for giggles, here's the statue that exempts us from helmets:
http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/f...=21-1306&ext=html&session=2015RS&tab=subject5

Note that right now the Elio will require a motorcycle license, even if we don't have to wear a helmet.

It seems that Senate bill 774 (2016) cleared up several aspects. However, I have not seen anything within it which addressed tag placement or what the class of the "autocycle" vehicles would be. The format is a bit rough; but I think that autocycles will be considered as a class M vehcile but legal to drive with a class C (normal car) driver's license.

I'm not sure if that legislative process is the same, but many bicameral legislation processes utilize a reconciliation process if there are similar, but not identical bills from each branch of the legislature. If only one is defeated the one that passes it's branch will send that bill to the other for consideration and the politics will determine whether and when it is taken up.

In all the other states; you will have a motorcycle plate for the rear only.
If they use a motorcycle plate on the Elio in Maryland, I would expect it to be the same; no front plate.
