A Wind-up Elio In Our Grandchildren's Future?

After reading the multi-award winning The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi, I can imagine a future when petroleum is long gone and motive power is provided by human labor and animals pouring kinetic energy into "springs", which then will then be used to power our 100 year old classic Elio down the road. Good book. Frightful future. It's something to read while we all wait.
