Money in Your Pocket – 6-27-14
by eliomotors

Happy Friday Elio Friends and Family! We had another great week this week as we had a chance to show off the P3 at the CES show in New York City. We talked to a lot of journalists that loved your Elio and who will be doing articles/blogs/videos about us in the coming days. Spreading the word on a national stage, great fun!

Speaking of great fun, have you had the chance to sit down and do the math on what the Elio will save you when we begin production next year? There was an article today in the USA Today that mentioned that Americans are planning 1.9% more travel this year over the July Fourth weekend. Over 41 million people are planning travel over the weekend, with almost 85% of them traveling by car more than 50 miles each way. This means that 35 million people will jump in their vehicles and travel at least 100 miles (50 out and 50 back) which is over 3.5 billion miles, yes with a B, billion. Wow, that is a lot of miles and a lot of money going into the gas tank!

So we started thinking... what if all of those miles were done in an Elio instead of an "average" vehicle. We know, this is not fully realistic because of a number of variables, but work with us. As it sits right now the 3.5 billion miles driven next weekend will average 22.8 mpg and the fuel would be $3.684. So here is what that looks like:

35,000,000 drivers ÷ 21.6 MPG US average* = 1,535,087.8 gallons
Then take those gallons times the average cost today in the US**

1,535,087 Gallons X $3.684 cost per gallon** = $5,969,444.44
That's almost $6 million dollars in gas that will be burned over next weekend alone! So what would that look like if you changed all of those miles to the Elio and the highway mileage of 84 mpg?

35,000,000 drivers ÷ 84 MPG Highway = 416,667 gallons
Which would cost:

416,667 Gallons X $3.684 cost per gallon** = $1,535,000

So, in the most extreme case we could save American drivers over 4 million dollars next weekend! How much fun could you make with an extra $4 million laying around?

Have you done the math on how this will positively affect your life and pocketbook? It is fairly easy to compute, all you need is your total miles driven, your current miles per gallon and how much you pay for gas. The numbers will vary for each person depending on what vehicle you drive now, your mileage etc. but in every case against a car or truck, you will save money with Elio.

We spoke with a reservation holder Lindsay in Oregon about her situation and this is what it will look like for her: Miles driven a week to work and errands: 350 - 400 Current MPG (Chevy Equinox) 23 mpg ("guesstimated")

400 miles per week ÷ 23 miles per gallon = 17.391 gallons X $3.959 = $68.85 per week in gasoline cost X 4.33 weeks a month = $298.12 a month. When she gets her Elio, that number looks like this: 400 miles per week ÷ 84 mpg (we are using 84 hwy for consistency with above example, it is not the EPA blended rate for miles per gallon) = 4.76 gallons X $ 3.959 = $18.85 week X 4.33 weeks in a month = $81.60 for the month. That means in this example Lindsay will save over $2,000 a year!

Take the time to do the math, you will be amazed on the money you can save on gas!

The Elio Preview Team is heading West, see you in Tacoma next weekend.

Thank you for your continued support and have a great weekend!

Just another ADVERTISEMENT 'BLOG'...... where is the; "Each week we are taking you along on our journey by sharing some of our progress making your Elio." Quote from 13, Sept, 2013 –
I tend to agree with RogWild. It would be nice to hear about some real time progress like where are we at with the P5, or what kind of progress and when can we expect to see the new engine, has anyone been to the new factory yet? Give us some real news, not the usually fluff stories about how much money we're going to save. We all know that already. That's why we're all in.

While it might be a little premature to sharpen the pitch-forks and pass out the torches.... (where do you even GET torches??), it's getting about time to see a bit more behind the curtain. SOMETHING must have been done this week besides calculating a few numbers from a local news broadcast right? How about some numbers from Elio? How about ANY news from Elio? Yes, yes, it's all very hush-hush....whatever. It's a car not the manhattan project. It's not that big a secret how a car is built. How about a projected time-table of development. Surely there must be one of those? Anything???.....

They keep saying; "
Elio Motors We certainly don't plan to extend it into 2016 Robert, and we're on track for next year!
But fail to say HOW they intend to do this, since... they don't have an assembled, running, and tested ENGINE yet, they have said that they still need to BUILD and TEST "18 to 26 "E" Series vehicles" BEFORE they can 'finalize' the design..... and BEGIN to hire personnel and re-tool the Shreveport Plant. And the next 'prototype' is not even scheduled to BEGIN construction until Aug/Sep 2014 (info from Technosports Creative, NOT Elio Motors). To remain 'credible', Elio Motors needs to provide some information about their PROGRESS...... and put some 'MEAT' on their 'Bony Claims'!

I would just like to say that yes, it'd be nice to see more details on their progress but I also accept the fact that this blog each week is marketing to try to get more reservations (hence why "The Elio Marketing Team" sends out the email).

While it is a little frustrating for us with reservations, I will keep my pitch fork in the garage for now.

However I am not a big fan if this weeks blog due to the math they provided was to replace EVERY vehicle with an Elio. People hauling more than 2 people and a small amount of luggage (families with children) make up a good amount of travelers. I wish they would have kept to their humble roots and said if they replaced only 25% with Elios, Americans would save over $1 million in gas in one weekend alone. Realistic scenarios speak much more loudly to me than unrealistic ones.

Have a good weekend all!

Maybe even better and more relevant would be to calculate if everyone commuted to work all week in an Elio, how much more money would they now have to spend on their weekend with family.

I'm with you mdfb42. I realize the blog is definitely a marketing tool so therefore is going to be directed more at attracting reservations than placating reservationists. My main disappointment is there is no mention of the schedule for Tacoma other than the fact they will be there. Sigh! I keep checking the website so I can update the calendar of events but so far nothing new. Oh well, maybe they have to be there to arrange the schedule. We will get it when we get it. In the mean time I notice someone beat me to the laundry room so I will enjoy the day not doing my laundry. LOL :-) Z
