It's almost amusing when people write about the Elio as if it actually exists.

I can't see the video from work, but if it's the Atlas robot doing a floor exercise it's remarkable how far they have come in 5 years. The first time I saw Atlas in person was in 2014. It was tethered and could barely walk.

I Have Given Up On Elio, Have You?

I stop by here once or twice a month to see what's going on and that's about it. I'm expecting to get exactly nothing out of my deposit. Turn out the lights, the party's over.

The World Championship has been moved to Detroit. It's OK in the square mile of downtown, but probably worse than St. Louis just outside that.

We will almost certainly go autonomous because we have a reputation for doing it well. The machine usually does what it's supposed to do. The kids... sometimes not so much.

Last Saturday (1/05) all 3500 FRC teams saw the game they will be playing this year for the first time. Here is the same video we all saw: From that moment we all have 46 days to build a robot to play this game. Back into sleep deprivation mode!

What Milage Would You Accept To Get Your Elio?

Please feel free to explain why such a comparison is invalid. The KLR650 I've referred to is a carbureted design from 1987. No variable valve timing or any of the other modern goodies that increase efficiency. Now add the poor aerodynamics into the mix. This thing has a 35 inch seat, which puts...

What Milage Would You Accept To Get Your Elio?

Agreed that the question assumes a relationship between fuel mileage and time to market, and we don't know that to be the case. If the question were rephrased to "What fuel mileage would I consider acceptable", the answer would be 60 mpg. My low-tech Kawasaki KLR650 regularly does 53 mpg, so...

Not FIRST related, but probably my favorite robot ever:

    Just Wow!!!

I'm not sure this will be a problem. My 1984 Honda V65 Sabre put 100+ HP to the ground through one 130 width tire. My 2015 Triumph Tiger Explorer (135HP at the crank) manages with one 150 width tire. Obviously being motorcycle tires they have a round profile and pretty small contact patches.

    Just Wow!!!

German drivetrain = nein danke for me. All of our opinions are shaped by personal experience. Mine haven't been good with vehicles from Germany. What happened that the original engine was abandoned? I thought it was nearly finished.

Odds & Ends And All Things That Don't Fit Anything Else

I see evidence of the bolded text every day. During my middle school years I considered the wood and metal shop courses I was required to take a waste of time. I didn't understand that those basic skills would be used daily. Fast forward to the 21st century. I mentor a high school robotics...

That engine looks so very German: Why use 3 parts when I can do the same job with 30?

    Momentum V163

No door on the right side. The tape is merely securing wires used for instrumentation during testing. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen that white one before. I don't remember seeing the Elio logo molded into the front bumper cover.

Two Teens Die In Firey Tesla Crash 05-09-18

This story is all over the news and I just don't understand why. There is no "news" about it. A car moving at a high velocity struck an immovable object and its occupants were killed. It happens all day, every day. The fact that the car didn't have an internal combustion engine doesn't change...

Team 230 has a disastrous start to the event but a great finish. Friday morning we walked on the field in 66th place. Friday evening we were 6th. That 12 hour bus ride though - I think I need an ass transplant.

We have the Hartford district event this weekend. It doesn't count for us (3rd district event) but it will be good driver practice and some new autonomous modes will get tweaked. 3 days later we head to Boston for the New England District Championship. I'm pretty sure we'll see you in Detroit!

I dunno. I like last week's blue ribbon a lot more than this week's red one. On the plus side, it looks like it will be impossible to screw up the district championship enough to keep us out of Detroit. Who knows... we might end up in the same division!
