I seem to recall the mpg loss for the open wheel style wheels, tires and fenders vs the P4 - P5 wheelcovers was almost 8 mpg. Although I hate the look I'm afraid for #8928 the the wheelcovers will have to stay.
I wrote about this over a year ago on this website. My experience is with a three wheeled motorcycle...two wheels in front with a third trailing wheel dead center of the two in front. It's a PROBLEM PERIOD ! ...You just have to choose your roads you drive regularly. The rear trailing wheel is...
Keep in mind that a camera on (or in) the wheel housing will probably shake too much to be of much use.
Check Ebay out for a wide variety of reflector-type led lights and mini fisheyes that you can incorporate into the covers.
They're really inexpensive... Like a couple of dollars a piece!
Same here. I think the difficulty will be getting a wiring harness out to the wheelcovers. If they fix that having running lights, turn signals of whatever type you or I would want should be easy. I'd prefer turn signals on the front and rear of the cover, running light on the outside.
...breaker for me.

Lane alert mirrors
LED marker lamps (low intensity) on leading and trailing edges of wheelcovers. Important for safety.

That's a change from his answer in January, when he said reflective tape would be standard and they were considering marker lights as an option -- they didn't want the cost of running the wiring to a bouncing moving surface like the wheelcovers.
Maybe mount them behind the grill?
The point is moot though, since (as somebody else mentioned) the Elio is legally a motorcycle and thus MUST have it's headlights illuminated any time the car is in motion.
If you want to be visible, you'd be better off with reflective tape, or possibly glow in the dark paint.
Have you tried getting a scratch out of chrome? I haven't, but it certainly doesn't look like a fun process.
Alternatively, one could try that water chroming technique on the dark plastic portion of the wheelcovers and the rear valence cover. That would certainly make it reflective and make the width of the vehicle much more apparent. And you wouldn't have to treat the whole car to improve visibility.
The wheel cover lights are under consideration; the question is whether they'll be standard or an option. (The standard in that case would be reflective tape). Either way, EM is aware that the full width of the wheels is NOT visible from the rear at night, and safety demands some sort of marking.
I'd like to see offered as an option color-matched aero covers for the suspension bits, similar to the ones on the Aptera.
And some lights for the front and rear of the wheelcovers, while we're at it.
One thing to remember on body styling parts (front spoiler, rear wing, etc.) is that they are special made and only fit the Elio. If it was a part for something like a Chevy PU where they have hundred's of thousands that have the same part that will fit, mass production lowers price.
With the...
...won't be a mad rush to supply every conceivable goody after all.
Just so long as I can get my rear view camera, safety LEDs on the wheelcovers to define the corners of the vehicle at night, and my cruise control, I can make do. Of course, temptation lurks .. but I'm with whoever it was the...
I would point out that the published ATVM loan application guidelines do not, on their face, explicitly require the demonstration of actual gas mileage. Indeed, it says "achieves" but then clarifies that later by explicitly allowing for the use of acceptable modeling...
...P5 does not have that curve. The cover makes a sharp corner where it meets the back side. Wind tunnel testing said that curve on the P4 wheelcovers was costing them 1 MPG. The same thing was found about the flairing of the body where the opening for the front suspension is. The P4 had a...
