Welcome to typical thread drift; at one point in the beginning of this thread the threads that were merged were talking about the same thing; why have two or three threads talking about the same topic when they all over lap? That's why they were merged.
As for the Ford Fiesta comment; that's...
...with the below. Thankfully it is a case of suspicions confirmed!
"Hello Frederick,
Yes, that is a mistake! The Elio will be using a timingchain instead of a belt.
Thanks,
Elio Team"
PS for the Moderators: I understand combining threads about the same topic, but why combine two new timing...

Current opinion is it's likely a misstatement by a marketing-type at Elio. The engine will have a timingchain.
That said, you may have been asleep since the ninety's. ;) Yes, timing belts were not as reliable as claimed when they were first widely used...
...is a mistake from some misinformed marketing moron! All of the engine photos I've seen to date clearly point to an internal lubricated timingCHAIN. Timing belts are not nearly as reliable and will lead to catastrophic engine damage in an interference engine when they break. It's just a...
I noticed that myself. It's the kind of thing that happens when announcements are made by computer people rather than engineering people. Unless IAV has made a major redesign, the engine still uses a timingchain.
"We are using a timing belt to optimize the engine’s reliability."
I thought they were using a timingchain. There is a difference between a belt and chain isn't there? :)
...to accelerate down the interstate.
We decided to trade in our Escalade for a 2007 Mini Cooper S. Yesterday after all the drama over the timingchain was finally worked out not even having three weeks from the dealer we went out for a ride into the countryside on a covered bridge tour. In all...
Awesome pics, AJ!! Got me a new wallpaper!
One thing I found curious. I'm glad they went with a timingchain rather than a belt, but why would it be exposed? Seems like a good way to get dirt into the engine. Then again, there may be a clear polycarbonate lens over the cover if my eyes...
I have not heard anything to indicate it is problematic. I was just thinking , In my lifetime "everything" is harder to do the work as you specified than a metro drivetrain "BUT" If it is a double overhead cam variable valve timing 3 cylinder which it looks like to me. That does sound enticing !.
...motor seem hard to maintain or expensive? Assuming you mean more than just oil changes. Are you referring to major maintenance like timingchain replacement and head work? If so, I would not think it would be any more expensive than any other car that comes out with a new motor. If Elio...
The Mazda Miata is the only other car I've driven that has that go cart feel like the Mini did. I drove one of those over in Germany on a trip. The Miata just felt right. Anyway, I know there's a bunch of cars that probably fit the bill. Unfortunately, I usually end up with something that...
...it used with low mileage but only a year left on the factory warranty. In that year she was in the shop four times, once to have the timingchain tensioner replaced under warranty. You need to check to see if yours has already been done, they are a common problem with the R56 MINI and if...
...it in for a 2012 Hyundai Veloster. Not nearly as sporty but a lot more reliable.
I think they have worked out the issues with the timingchain tensioner which was a big issue with those earlier turbo Prince motors, but still have issues with valve coking being direct injected? Worth...
Now, it's official. Bridgestone is no longer buying Pep Boys... From Pep Boys' site in the "Press" area:
