The reservation difference is with Tesla's Model 3 $1K fully refundable reservation deposit you are guaranteed a vehicle. With the Elio's $1K non-refundable reservation you get a T-shirt and $500 bonus incentive, but no guarantee that the vehicle will ever be manufactured. The no guarantee forces most people to wait until they see and or test drive a production model Elio. Elio reservations should skyrocket after that group of financially cautious consumers feel it's real. Technically, EM announced earmarking 3-4 E builds for ride and drive events. A few E Builds and or the 100 pre-production Elio's should be tagged for those ride and drives Q4 2016. Imagine the jumpstart flurry of reservations that would cause!

EM's current forward thinking statements still offer no guarantees with little tangible progress since the P5 unveil and the successful crowdfunding campaign. Hopefully, there is a bustle of Elio related activity at Roush.

Although, I thought it was 200,000 vehicles of a particular model. But maybe I got that wrong?
It could be model.......but then again most manufacturer's only have one EV model. Tesla sold 50,000 Model S Sedans in 2015 for a grand total of 125,000 EV's since starting production. So if the incentive max is 200,000 cars per manufacture not many if any Tesla Model 3 owners would qualify in 2017.............so it's more likely based on model.

But it's alright if a company so out sells their manufacturing capacity that they admit they may not deliver some until 2020 and their first deliveries won't happen until the end of 2017?

I don't know Tesla's current manufacturing capacity. I hope EM outsells their potential manufacturing capacity. If a company is going to have a manufacturing problem, higher than expected demand for their product is the one to have. They will continue to crank out as many vehicles as they can and ramp production if need be.

Tesla was pleasantly surprised by the high number of reservations and now rethinking their manufacturing strategy to insure reservations are filled as efficiently as possible. Perhaps the plan will be to build another manufacturing facility or expand their current plant, hire production people and run a 2nd/3rd shift if not currently running a 24/7 plant schedule. My bet is they will figure it out with a Plan B.

No, it's not alright for me personally because I'm old and tired of waiting on scoring at least 1 of the 3 vehicle reservations that I may never have the opportunity of buying and driving. I'm thinking about adding a fourth...........the $250 refundable Solo reservation that may increase the odds for some fun around town commuting, but my wife may have me committed.

Being interested in the bleeding edge of personal transportation technology can definitely be frustrating.

Over the years I have been interested in several vehicles which never made it to market and currently besides the Elio and Tesla Model 3 I have been following the Lit Motors C-1 for years however I have not made a reservation as that project still needs to work through some serious technical hurdles.

I'd seen the C-1 for a number of years and wondered what happened to them; they were big news for a year or 2 and then just faded away.
I was very interested in them also, but never pursued them.
It does have some very unique features and tech in it (even though they must be hoping for really small back seat passengers)
