Clutch pedal presses to floor and does allow me to shift. However it is very close to the floor still when I feel the clutch engage again.

Clutch disc or cylinders worn ?

2005 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L clutch has about 160,000 miles on it.

Try bleeding the clutch line. (At the slave cylinder.) Possible air in system. I assume you have checked the reservoir.
Look for leakage on the firewall at the clutch master cylinder also.

No noticeable leakage but clutch reservoir was filthy with particulate material. I would love to flush the clutch system out as I only just replaced the slave and master cylinders 2 and 3 years ago respectively.

If it's got garbage in the fluid, dump it all out, fill with fresh, bleed it, drive for 2 to 3 weeks, and you'll probably see gark in it again, dump it (flush) and fill with new, bleed it, should be good.
Hydraulic doesn't like little crumbs in it; has a tendency to plug things up at the wrong time.

Wait, you said it leaks? Change what I said; dump all the fluid, drain slave, make sure line is clear, replace master, hook it all up, fill and bleed, top off, be happy. :becky:

I had a similar experience with a GMC Sonoma, 2.2 (different trans, tho). Clutch disc got sooo thin a piece broke off and wedged itself between the pressure plate and what was left of the disc. So I would push the pedal and it wouldn't release. I had about the same miles, too.

Gark? Love it. That one is right up there with drain mung... :D
Gark is an abbreviation for a lot of words combined; and for some reason women understand what it means.
It's a name that covers a lot of terms all rolled into one, and will work for a lot of things and it isn't a curse word (it can be ;) like "things are all just Garked up" or "get that Gark out of the way", or "it was filling with Gark, that's why it ran so bad"

I replaced the master cylinder and flushed out the system thoroughly. The new master cylinder is metal casing, the old one was plastic. I think the brake fluid was breaking down the rubber seal and plastic housing.

Pedal feels great again. Thanks everyone!
Glad to hear you got it fixed. I hope it wasn't too much of a pain.
