One of my first questions when I saw Elio advertised was "Does it come in automatic? How much will that cost?" To which the Facebook rep said, "Yes, it will cost about $1000."

I don't remember the nature of the advert that first turned me on to the Elio, but obviously I got the impression pretty quickly that it came with a Manual as standard. I wish I could buy it with a Manual, but unfortunately my wife and I need a car that we can both drive. She is a wonderful and very capable woman, and I think she could pick up a manual pretty quickly, but she doesn't believe that about herself and she gets frustrated at just the thought of learning to drive a stick. So, it's the AMT for us.
Ditto. My wife simply will not even consider learning to drive a manual transmission

I much prefer the better handling associated with the manual transmission. You choose when to shift, where, and by looking ahead as you drive you always have control. I've rarely had major problems driving on ice or snow with a standard transmission. Until my knees give out, I'll stick with it.
Autos on the other hand, are very good if you're slingshot racing! it's hard to beat the shift time of them while under power!

I have been puzzled by the transmission question. Best I can tell, most cars are sold with automatics. If you want a manual, it's extra. Seems the Elio automatic is more expensive than the manual for some reason. Elio seems genuine about keeping the price down. So I guess that's the situation with this vehicle.

Best you can tell?
Then you cant tell very well.
Checkout 2016 Ford Fiesta base model. --- manual transmission --- about $14K
Look at base model cheapest versions.
Where manual is available, cost is about $1000 less.

Well, think about it from a cost perspective: if more people want and drive automatic transmissions, then a company who manufactures manual transmissions will probably be able to offer a better deal on their product (because they need the sales more). So Elio is able to cut a deal with the manufacturer, thus lowering the overall price of the base model Elio.

In this scenario, the people who pay $1050 extra for an automatic are actually subsidizing the low cost of the base-model Elio. The people willing to pay $7850 are helping the people who can only afford $6800. I'm not saying this is the reality, but it wouldn't surprise me.

In my younger Years I drove and preferred a Manual Transmission but now with Hip and Back problems I can no longer drive Vehicle wirh a Manual Transmission so I have no choice but to use an Automatic Transmission.

Wonder how many other Elio Enthusiasts and to be Owners may have to opt in for an Automatic Transmission. The extra $1,000.00 for the Automatic is well worth it for with a Manual Transmission the car would be parked in driveway
