I understand where you are coming from, but the majority of the public wants, and Elio motors needs this thing regulated like a car for it to sell in the numbers needed...

As long as the Elio can be driven with a normal car drivers license and without a helmet the public could care less about the exact government classification. Those issues are what would affect sales so that is why EM has chosen to tackle those legal issues first. In reality in most states being a motorcycle actually has added advantages over a car such as easy HOV lane access as well as reduced or removed requirements for safety and smog inspections.

The fact of the matter is that Elio Motors needs the Federal government to regulate this vehicle as a motorcycle as this is one way they are able to keep the vehicle cost so low. EM also does not care whether the state governments label it a motorcycle or auto-cycle as long as they do not require a motorcycle license and helmet use.

UPDATE: Got a call from a Hutchinson, KS newspaper reporter. Hutchinson has about 42,000 people, it's about 50 miles from Wichita. She wanted to know about the autocycle legislation. Apparently the paper follows the actions of my state representative, and maybe his people gave the reporter my name and contact info. Kinda exciting!

Talked with the reporter, it was very enjoyable. We discussed Elio Motors, autocycles, the Elio vehicle, states and their laws, helmet and mc license. She asked typical questions, such as what about the wind affecting the vehicle, how many people does it hold, how fast can it go, is the engine normal, where is the plant for EM, are other states making similar law changes, is it safe on the interstate, what's the ground clearance, it's defined by the feds as a motorcycle but it's automotive driver controls and safety features, and many others.

I did point out that for Kansas, no helmet is needed, but the DMV said you will need the mc license, Elio Motors said you won't, so I just decided to see if we could get a bill introduced to define an autocycle so it's clear that all you need is a normal driver's license.

Today is a good day.

An interesting twist. All of this is great news, and we are making progress and moving forward. But.......... Polaris was able to talk them into removing the word "enclosed", according to the above article. First I've heard of it. Joel S. is aware of it, and while we initially were concerned if the bill allowed the Slingshot to be called an autocycle, it sounds like it's probably ok. Who knows, maybe there's more "weight" behind the bill if both Elio Motors and Polaris are asking for this bill to be passed.

There is the danger that some Kansas senator will say "have you seen how dangerous the Slingshot is? If we allow people to not wear helmets while driving a Slingshot, there could be a large number of head injuries." I dunno, we'll wee how it goes. The Polaris person must've been able to spin things well because the bill came out of the Transportation Committee looking good enough to be passed 122-0 in the House.

We'll watch things in the Senate, keep our fingers crossed, and act if necessary. :)

I have actually been a bit surprised that Polaris has not done this in more states as they are aware of EM's efforts and have even been in contact with Joel S. as EM and Polaris have pretty much been forced to work together in CT as separate bills there have been combined into one. I wonder if next year Polaris will go around the country and push bills to remove 'enclosed' from the laws that EM will get passed this year.

This could back fire on ELIO. If lawmakers get the idea that approving ELIO an Enclosed cab could lead to allowing the slingshot to be included they may turn against ELIO support.

They are taking the opposite version of Elio's campaign. Push out the slingshot and when legal problems arise fix them as they come to light. While Slingshot is similar vehicle to Elio they are not in the same market. I would bet more Elio's will be daily driven vs slingshot.
