50 years ago we attained 100mpg in an economy run with an Austin Healy Sprite.
The Elio with the current Geo engine should be doing 60+mpg? Some one some where will get 85mpg with an Elio, but I doubt very much the fleet average of a group of commuters will equal 60mpg.
We currently enjoy 42mpg with our Miata, slightly better than with our Goldwing. This will do until the Elio comes along. An $8000 used Miata with 100K on the odometer, will still give you another 100K of service for slightly higher fuel cost. This is our stop gap solution while waiting.
Very true, but my limited edition MR2 (only 890 white 03 were imported) is a lot more sports car- like, and as yours, gets great reliable milage. Love mine, will keep it if the E doesn't come to pass with only 12k it'll well outlive me (my grand kids keep watching my medical conditions, hummmmm.......)

I jumped in on the ELIO because I support the idea of the car and the American start up. I spent a hour today taking my self out of a 40K CVO RGU instead of waiting until August for the 2015 RGU to be released. What Dealer did not know was if he had moved just a bit ,I would have taken it.
With the ELIO for me it is not about the $6,800 price tag or even a full 84Mpg it is the whole package. I want an ELIO , I do doubt it will happen now.

I've owned two Miata's and have never gotten better than 28-30 mpg. You must be driving them like a Prius and coasting downhill. Miata's just beg to be driven hard. Nothing wrong with that just sayin'...

The only time we checked mileage was over a 4 day trip with a group of Gold wings. We got better mileage than a bike with 2 people and less than a bike with one. We have the 1.6l.

I can understand Pschencker's frustration. I've been away from this forum for a month or so. I used to check it several times a day. I switched my fun dollars to the Reeper that I've posted about here before. Not trying to sell anyone anything, I'm still a huge Elio fan but I'm struck by the differences in the Elio forum versus the Reeper forum. The Reeper guys are all talking about mods to their vehicles and posting video's and accounts of off roading adventures and such and this forum is all about opinions of fact versus faith. Published numbers versus possible bull*hit. Nobody on this forum really knows jack about what's happening with the Elio because no one is on the payroll so it's all just opinion. Admittedly it's not a fair comparison since the Reeper exists and the Elio is still trying to exist. I'm still pulling for Paul. I've met the man and I believe in his sincerity, but since I'm not getting any younger I've got a 2015 Reeper on order for April. First trip will be to Assateague Island and some beach running.
That Reeper looks like it's really fun! Open and street legal! Good luck to the person on site in Shanghai, from accounts I've read that unless the Chinese company making them understands the importance of a quality build the stay in China riding herd on this project will have a nightmare stay! With that said, some of the companies in China produce quality products, they get it. Have a lot of fun with that rig Mark! What color did you order?

I'll be sticking with Elio though, the price point and the whole point of the car (American made, fuel efficient, made so people can afford it) are keeping me there. My need is for year round transport that I can afford. Although over all the Reeper has the fun factor nailed!

http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/new-electric-cargo-trike-for-adult_1906440798.html

Check out the fenders on the yellow trike.
Typical mismatched junk.
"Japanese design". Then "DESIGN: ITALY"
ELECTRIC TRIKE With 250cc motor.
You want it? We have all the engrissh, just no connection to the product.
We just had 50 sets of an automotive product made. The prototype was a work of art. The production run, using the same molds and jigs had 25 right hand which were a perfect match of the prototype but 25 left hand none of which fit, 20 of which were identical plus 5 which did not even match the 20, which were wrong. This was May 2014. We are still waiting for the correct product. They have agreed to replace the faulty product, keep promising a date, but never ship.
With electric bikes, they "guarantee 100% tested" but their solution to 8% DOA is to add 20% "FREE" in the next container.
It is a very different culture!
My solution would be to buy a Chinese tadpole trike AND a local wrecked bike. Change engine first, then enjoy.

Yeah, Chinese scooters fall into that catagory, cheap and colorful and if you didn't know what to look for, a reasonable looking bike. I shudder every time I see someone on one. It's not just the motors that could end in disaster, any essential component for safety (you know, brakes, lights, tires, anything really) could and probably would fail. Nasty.
