I was mostly randomly reading various news last night on my tablet and there, in the middle of the article I was reading, was a 1.5" square ad for the Elio! This might not be new to most of you, but I use AdBlock on my desktop browsers, so my phone or tablet are the only places this could sneak through.

This brings up several thoughts

1). Using a mobile browser, I see why I run AdBlock on my desktop browsers. I understand the importance of advertising to web sites, but that doesn't mean like it.

2). Whatever engine was placing those ads on that site apparently knew I had an interest in the Elio. A bit further down was an ad for Honda (my current daily driver is a Civic Coupe). It's a little scary how much they know about me, but I suppose if I have to see ads, I'd rather see ads for products I have some interest in rather than, say Apple products (which I Have no interest in. Linux loving Fandroid here).

3). ELIO IS ACTUALLY ADVERTISING! This is the first indication I've seen where they've gone beyond word of mouth, news reports, and 'viral' advertising to actual paid ads. I see that as a good sign. It implies they're confident enough to actually put money into advertising. Those pop ups aren't expensive, but it's a start. Maybe next year a Super Bowl ad!

This has been going on for some time. Some browsers will let you kill almost all ads (Safari, for one). But Firefox seems to thrive on 'em ... if I've been checking out camera gear, I start getting ads almost immediately -- for camera gear. I find this highly offensive, but there's no way to really stop it. What's happening is that an advertising partner -- say Amazon -- records what page you visited (via cookie), and relays that to your phone provider or web browser, and bingo! you're inundated.

Visits to Elio's home page have triggered this advertising in the past. And I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that visiting the Elio Facebook page is like walking nude through a mosquito-ridden swamp in summertime -- it's raw food to them.

It's almost a annoying as searching for something specific on e-Bay and getting a list of 100 things that are similar to what you searched for -- but not what you did search for. For instance, if I search for a Nikon-mount f3.5 400 millimeter AIS lens from Sigma, it will give me f4, 120-400 zooms instead. That's because the thing I really wanted is scarce, and there's a ton of what I DON'T want. And you can't stop their search engine from doing this. Amazon is the same way.

So -- after all that, not only does the advertising start, but -- IT'S FOR THE WRONG PRODUCT!

Grrr.

Kinda scary isn't it?...and everyone is doing it.
I recently read about a man who called Target to "rip them a new one." After all, why in the "sam he!!" is Target sending e-mail adds for baby cloths and such, to "my 16 year old daughter!?!?" It turns out, his 16 year old daughter used her debit card to buy a pregnancy test. Soon after that, she started buying prenatal vitamins. Shortly thereafter, he called them back to apologize.

Scary, isn't it?

All stuff that he has said before, but it does make for a compelling ad! Good visuals
Has Elio said that after five years of sales they can reduce total US gas consumption by .35% before? That seems a rather specific thing to mention, considering they are in the second stage of the ATVM loan process.

The assumption is that they'r selling 250,000 cars per year for the five years. This illustration has been used before.
