LOL. I think you should go tear into your dash and interior of most modern cars and check for yourselves. You guys are misinformed. Sure, some fasteners are common. *SOME*. Quiz: do you even know what a TTY bolt is?
Have tore down and rebuilt more vehicles than years you have spent on this globe....TTY bolts are a single use Torque to yield..... now do you have a point in this pointless question.

Torque to yield bolts are manufactured in commonly required sizes. If the Elio engine requires a non standard size, any manufacturer would be very pleased to come up up with the goods for a contract of this size.

Is this thread designed for any useful purpose, or just a medium for "willy waving"?

Just starting at the cylinder head it already begins to disprove your point.

  • Newly designed
  • Cylinder head casting
  • Camshaft
  • Valve cover
  • Head side cover

  • Available parts
  • Valves(x6)
  • Valve springs(x6)
  • Valve spring retainers(x6)
  • Valve keepers(x12)
  • Valve seats(x6)
  • Lifters(x6)
  • Cam Position Sensor
  • Exhaust manifold bolts(x6)
  • Intake manifold bolts(x7)
  • Valve cover bolts (x8)
  • Oil cap
  • Cylinder head bolts(x8)
  • Head side cover bolts(x5)

By my parts count the dressed head is around 95% existing parts. Heck I'd venture most vehicles currently on the road are somewhere near 50-60% off the manufacturer's existing(or contract existing) parts. The Rolls Royce I worked on yesterday is just a BMW v12 driveline from a 750iL tossed into a different chassis.

IMHO, it is important to consider that we are living in the days of precision engineering and CNC machining. These guys are not utilizing any NEW technology. They are just tweaking existing three-cylinder plans to meet their requirements. Not rocket science. The key to their success lies in utilizing absolutely correct metals, of the highest quality for each part of this engine. No matter how cute, how high the mileage, how inexpensive to buy, if this little car starts smoking in 50,000 miles it'll be way less popular....but THEY know that.

You guys keep forgetting these parts have been out of series production for over TWENTY YEARS...

Replacement parts were stopped years ago. You know EM can't source engine valves from the junkyards, right!?

Look, there are some very encouraging signs from EM lately. I count myself as a very realistic optimist. But what really galls me is LIES. Stop lying! Stop saying you have "mostly off the shelf parts" when it is FAAAAAR from the truth.

Are you guys okay with bold, in-your-face, flat out lies as long as the goal matches your wishes?:confused:o_O

Wonderful. You are probably 1/10,000 that have ever even heard of one or understand it. Now, can you answer HOW a TTY is selected for an application, and how ONE TTY is not appropriate to all applications, with respect to *this* car?

Please also answer me how modern automotive hoses and ducts are "just cut" and not molded and how carpets are "just cut" and not molded. I think most of you must own 1960's Fords if you think that's the case.

Pssst: it ain't!

The point of the thread (gosh, it shouldn't have to be said, even as it is entirely self-obvious) is prove me wrong: start listing PART NUMBERS from parts suppliers in ACTIVE production or from PARTS RESELLERS with ACTUAL inventoried items.

Or, go on believing the LIE, just because it pleases you, I guess. Can't understand why people love deluding themselves though.
