Navy Submarine Service from 81-91 (SSN-709 & Instructor) . Army National Guard (19D Scout / 11B Gun Bunny) 2002-2013. 3 combat ribbons.

My brother was on a sub and talked me out of joining the Navy as a nuclear power tech. I was already to sign up had all the test taken and everything. My brother spent 4 years on the Seawolf SSN 575 in the early 80s.

US Army Reserve 301st Evac hospital Fargo, ND, 81-82, 94 Foxtrot ( Hospital Food Service ). Regular Army 82-85, 92 Bravo ( combat medic ). Ft. Jackson, SC for boot, Ft. Sam Houston, TX, for AIT. Duty stations included, Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, Aurora, CO. 7th Army Medical Command, Frankfort, West Germany, assigned to US Army Hospital, Wurzburg, detached to Bad Kissengen Medical Treatment Facility. The Post at BK was so small you could walk across it in 5 minutes. FAMC wasn't much bigger, it took about 10 minutes to walk from the front gate to the back gate.
I'm also an Army brat and grew up at Ft. Benning, GA, Ft. Riley, KS, Ft. Lewis, WA, Ft. Polk, LA, Schweinfort and Worms, West Germany and Moorhead, MN (while Dad was in Vietnam).
My wife is also a Navy Veteran, Air craft mechanic, 77-80.

I want to thank every last one of you for your service!!! I did not serve but I have the utmost respect for everyone of you!!! My brother-in-law served in the army's 10th mountain division out of Ft. Drum but he was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan back in 2009.
KC_Cacti, so sorry for your loss. In my family, Military Service goes back to Civil War that we know of, when my GG Grandfather was a Lt. In Wisconsin Home Guard ( precursor to National Guard ). Our only loss was my Great Uncle in WW1. He is buried in France. His death was just six weeks before the armistice. They named the VFW Post in Gardner, ND in his Honor. Not everyone who serves wears a uniform, ask any military dependent and they will tell you the sacrifices they made while their service member served. Again sorry for your loss and please tell your sister, "thank you." for her sacrifice.

I was stationed at some pretty small bases, the smallest being Kure Island Hawaii. It is a small island 1200 miles NW of Honolulu. The only way out there was by boat or C130. We had a crew of 17 and stayed on the Island for a year. You can see it here

Military service can be pretty lonely at times especially when the sense of isolation sets in
