Fantastic!

I hope you didn't take offense. Your post came across as a bit confusing.

I have been on the internet for over 25 years.. That plus forums which I happen to be a moderator at a wood burning forum.. Not offended at all.. :)

One reason I don't want a CVT transmission might be - look up some cars that have a CVT transmission that has been replaced - the cost is astronomical. Some of the reviews were people that towed trailers and such that might have been too hard to tow, that's when the trouble started.
I have never had a transmission repaired other than my F150 and that was electrical from a wiring harness that got too close to the exhaust manifold.. I do drive fairly fast but I don't hammer the transmission.. I have been driving for over 40 years..

I sure hope that we see some stats from Elio regarding performance, mileage, etc. for the auto vs the manual based on measurements done with the E series. And still holding out hope for yellow as a color option.

CVTs are a bit different than traditional automatics in that the continuous variability mechanism usually involves frictional contacts that are inherently prone to wear and slipping. That's why special transmission fluids and regular service are required that you wouldn't necessarily need on a more traditional discrete gear transmission (auto or manual).

Sorry I disagree.. I had zero maintenance on my 2008 Nissan Sentra and my 2016 Subaru Legacy same thing..

Just because you haven't had trouble yet doesn't mean you won't later on down the road. I was just saying that the basic mechanisms involved in CVTs introduce new failure modes that are more wear dependent than traditional transmissions. They can still be designed to provide adequate life to cover the first owner of a new car (~200k miles or less), but I wouldn't expect to see many CVTs still running without a major rebuild after 300-500k miles like you often see with traditional manuals and automatics.

I don't expect any car I own to last 300-500K.. I get tired of them long before that!

I know how a CVT works as well, there is a pulley type in nearly every modern snowmobile and ATVs as well, I suspect. When I followed the link that raybonz provided (thank you) I realized I need to do some research. I just can't seem to see how two smooth metal pulleys connected by a multi-link steel chain would do anything except make pounds of metal filings :twitch:

any major repairs over 3K (transmission?, motor?) buy a new one and parts-out the rest. I'm gonna take a stab here and suggest the insurance companies will also determine the cost of repair vs replacement. I know at some future rally/nationals there will be a contest to take an E apart and put it back together!, and another competition to ride on just the front wheels!!
See you there!!, I think the PNW would be ideal for the first National!!

You haven't heard?
Scientists have taken yellow off of the periodic table.
It's been all over the news.
