Yes HUD would be a great add on.

So I'm left wondering if a HUD is great in concept and not so great in practice. We don't see them offered on cars very often. I suspect originally this was because of cost but given the number of add on HUD devices available now I would imagine a car manufacture could offer it for less than $100 their cost.

I've also been reading a number of reviews of the add on HUDs and whether it is because they are cheap or perhaps don't live up to people's expectations, there seem to be a lot of negative reviews.

One of the primary complaints I read about is that because of the safety glass in a windshield there are often dual images that appear. Additionally, a number of users report that they found that the HUD actually contributed to distraction.

I remain curious about this and someday I'll probably put my phone on my dash to see what it looks like.

OK. Someone get me out of the dark ages. You can't be talking about the only HUD I'm familiar with. That is the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Well, then, the answer is simple: we need to start making windshields out of the same stuff as they use in fighter jets. It will have the added advantage of being able to withstand bird strikes. (Just not frozen ones.)

Hmmm. It better be good considering I can get a wide variety of aftermarket HUDs @ around $50.

Yep, I just bought one for the Infiniti at $40. Works great. Not ideal because the windshield isn't designed for it, but very readable.
When I first bought my '08 'Vette, I thought the HUD was a nice "trinket". After driving with it for a few months I wondered how I've gotten along without it.
