I realize that 12-15k is average annual mileage for most people. Those of us who are above average want a car that will last forever and sip fuel. Diesels run practically forever and there is about 30% more energy in diesel than gas. Not only that but if a diesel doesn't have all of the emissions crap you can run bio-diesel on the cheap, or you could use home heating fuel and skip out on taxes (that probably won't even hurt the emissions crap)... just don't get caught... Suddenly diesel is cheaper than gas. That said, I am not sure the engine longevity is an issue. My Subaru with almost 230k has never had engine issues. Wheel bearings, break calipers, a leaky gas tank (that requires removal of the real axle to replace...), the pipe to the catalytic converter requiring me to replace the catalytic converter are different stories.

Ok, the next question then becomes what is considered cruise? 55? 65? 75mph? I think that is one place where automakers fall very short. On the straight and level, with a lot of low end torque and high gear ratio a lot of cars could get better mileage on the highway. Perhaps I am the exception to the rule that I rarely sit in traffic but I could care less about city mileage. My wife grew up on Long Island and she sat in traffic so much growing up that she couldn't understand why posted fuel economies had highway driving as more economical than city driving. It wasn't until she moved to the country that she realized that being stopped in traffic on the highway is still city driving.

It also bothers me that most auto makers consider 30mpg good. I had a 1996 Dodge stratus with a 1 coke bottle engine (2 liter) that I could count on 36 mpg. If I worked at it I could get 40. I don't understand why there hasn't been more development in high low end torque with high gear ratios for highway driving.

I think the "norm" is 65 mph.

Try running that on most freeways, and you will get "run over".
It's counter-intuitive. The more crowded the freeway, the crazier and faster people drive, until they run out of room to drive crazy and come to a standstill. Then they act even crazier than they drive..

Just in Texas! LOL just kidding. I hate driving in Dallas and Houston any space in front of you is not a safe distance but a slot for someone to squeeze in.

I see you've never driven in L.A. or Chicago; that much space is enough for 2 cars; one from the left, and one from the right.

New Yuck State needs money. Much over 72 on I88 and will get you a ticket... Just the court fee is $80. The total cost of the ticket is most likely over $200. At least that is what a state trooper told me. The key is to know where they sit... Waze helps... It also helps to drive it every day. I did see Pappy Boyington (The license plate was VMF 214) yesterday going faster than that but I didn't see any cop's either... There was just something so cool about the F4U corsair with it's inverse gull wings.

Not everyone likes a diesel engine, but the enormous fuel savings are beyond doubt very good. I have owned a Jetta wagon for 12 years and no problems. Anyone interested in a diesel engine option?

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT MY SON IS WAITING FOR .
I HAVE A FEELING HE WILL GET A CHANCE TO DRIVE MY GAS MODEL
BEFORE THAT OPTION GETS SOME SERIOUS DISCUSSION BY ELIO .

No one has mentioned the savings there would be on the spark plugs; only one door, only 2 seats, only 3 tires, and no spark plugs.
