Impressed! Now how about those individual runners as an exhaust manifold that converge at a union with the exhaust pipe--- potential for a split run to the rear of chasis and a sport car sound? RB (how about it , you engineers---my Georgia Tech ME goes just so far and then must yield to others!)RB

Note the three runners for exhaust ports that converge into the collar for rear exhaust pipe. Might produce a nice engine note or with triple pipes all the way, might have a real sporty sound??RB

2 things of note: 1 it would have a bit less power, 2. there is a catalytic converter in the stream which brings the three exhaust notes together for a bit. However, you are absolutely correct in the fact that an even firing three cylinder does have a sweet exhaust sound!

So from what I'm reading here, the IAV motor is a detuned/derated engine capable of more horses than what is being offered to give better mileage, right? So by re-tuning the fuel/air ratio and timing of this engine equals more horses! I've got to stop thinking about these crazy ideas! LOL.

My Fiesta gets a consistent 39-41MPG 1.6l 120hp and 112ft-lb. it is direct port injection with variable valve timing. Getting to 84MPG will be a stretch but with lighter weight (Fiesta is 2,575#) and better aerodynamics and 3 wheels it's doable. Go Elio!

I was watching a Drivers Talk Radio Show on YouTube, Drivers Talk Radio Show #711 with Elio Motors, and at one point the host blurted out this question to Paul Elio. "Will the motor be direct injection?" To which Paul answered "Yes". Watching the video you would have thought someone had let a cat out of a bag. There was a brief pause......then the conversation turned to something else. Check it out for yourself. I believe that direction injection tech is rock solid and only makes the best sense.

If you watch the YouTube video the interview is rather long, but full of good info. At 20 min and 48 secs the question is asked and Paul answers "YES" to direct fuel injection.

Except that if you look at the 3D model they made a CGI video of, it's just port side fuel injection. Also, this is what they have on the company blog from one of the Q&A sessions:

Q. What type of fuel injection will the Elio/IAV engine have?

  • Our engine will be designed with sequential port fuel injection as a fuel delivery method. This allows us to control the fuel usage more accurately which leads to the outstanding gas mileage that we will achieve, 84 mpg on the highway.
