The first year they went to the Chase (gag) Jeffy was leading the points by like 600 points; the chase started, and he lost that big lead. They kept track of the old system points and without a doubt, Jeff would have had his 5th Championship. He was robbed.
Jeff was the best of the first next generation drivers, this includes Tony, and Jimmy J., Harvick just to mention a few; the generation after Jeff, the Brad's and the Joey's have a lot to prove to be up in their territory; then there's another generation chasing them. I would really like to see Larson win a bunch, Chase Elliott IMHO has got the breeding to be the next Jeffy.

And isn't it funny; I don't see Shrub's name anywhere on that all time winner list.
(I looked it up, he only has 29)
The media got that part really wrong when they were calling him the "all time winningest driver".

What??, the media getting something wrong, and over emphasising/exaggerating something. Say it ain't so. And yes you can insert sarcasm here.

Actually he did win a lot of races, just not that many in Cup; it was all of the lower series; he still runs Nationwide (Busch) series against all of the up and coming "kids"; same goes for the Truck Series where it's even greener (younger) kids, and the washouts. Jeff never ran any of those races (if he did it was very few).
I will say that he (Shrub) can drive; there is no denying that, he just can't always get the job done.
He was big time gung-ho when he first started (that's one of the reason he didn't finish a lot of races), and he has gotten more "careful" ever since he had his big wreck. Denny Hamlin will probably never be the same since his.

New year, new rules, big changes.
Field is slimmed down from 43 to 40
Charters; 36 of them given to the teams that have competed over the last 3 full seasons; a charter guarantees a starting position, the last 4 positions will have to race in. Big news on this, Cousin Carl, Kurt Busch and the Woods Brothers did not get charters, but Mikey (MWR) got 2 and he is not fielding a team this year.
Extra charters (like Mikey's) are expected to sell for millions. Rumor has it Carl and Kurt will get (buy) them. Woods Brothers are asking for an exception since they have won in every decade since NASCAR started, and they had planned on running a full schedule this year. Updates on this as they comes out.

Seems that the "Alliance" had something to do with this, they wanted a way to tell a sponsor that they will be in every race for the full season.
They are not calling it "the alliance" any longer (I forgot what the new name is).

Just a little more than an hour until the NASCAR season starts. I'll certainly enjoy a non-points race to get the adrenalin going.
