I have a disabled parking permit; probably get a disabled plate for mine (yes, they do have them).
If a parking place is close to where I'm going, I'll use it, if not (and I'm having a bad day) I use the handicapped stalls.
If I have to ride a ferry when I go up to Seattle, bikes always get to go up front; you bet I'll be using bike status then.

It just really gets to me when I see perfectly healthy people park in a handicapped stall, get out and run into the place of business.
I sat in JC Penny's lot one year waiting for a friend and I wish I had a video camera; they number of people that abuse the permits is disgusting.
One had made their own (it looked that tacky) but had so much other crap hanging from the mirror you could barely see it.

Got to be careful with accusations, my daughter who has lupus can look fine getting out of the car, but by the time she walks into the store and gets a few things can barely make it back to the car, if it was not in the handicapped parking would not be able to at all. My wife looks fine getting out of the car but if she walks by someone with too much perfume/after shave on, if they are using cleaners in the store or if she runs into one of the thousands of different things that trigger her breathing attacks can many times not even make it to the handicapped parking and has to be helped back to her car.

Best personal mobility scooter ever @ under 30#. Gets me through Costco, the big box stores, and can ride it through the airport right up to the plane door. Allows me the opportunity to travel. Folds to fit in the smallest spaces and will easily fit in the Elio. www.travelscoot.com

I'm the same way; I have a right side limp; I broke my neck (C2&C3) blew out 3 disks in my lower back (L3-L5) I have instable sacroiliac joints (both sides) degenerative arthritis throughout my entire back and nerve damage in both feet/legs from the knees down (severe neuropathy).
So I too look normal on the outside but the insides are all messed up. So I understand what you're saying.

When I said the people that fake it, I can tell the difference. One is if you get out and run to the store, odds are that's not your permit. If you get out, go around to the trunk/cargo area and pick up a 80lb bag of cement, flip it over your shoulder, it's probably not your permit.
I ran (still do but in a different way) a shop that builds surveillance vehicles. These were for PI's, a number of government agencies with 3 letter names, and a couple different police departments. For the PI's, a lot of long time surveillance is for disability scammers; one PI caught more people scamming using my vehicles than she ever had before. One woman even commented "they have been trying to catch me for over 5 years, how did you do it?"
The PI just told her "I have a wizard that helps me".

I WAS STRICKEN WITH GUILLAIN-BARRE' SYNDROME A FEW YEARS AGO .
I WAS PARTLY PARALYZED FOR AWHILE BUT MADE A REMARKABLE RECOVERY .

THE DOCTORS THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A LONG TIME BEFORE I COULD WALK AGAIN
AND THE NC-DMV PROVIDED TWO "PERMANENT" HANDICAPPED PLATES .

I WAS WALKING WITH A CANE IN ABOUT 3 MONTHS AND WENT BACK TO WORK .
THE PROSPECT OF LOSING YOUR HOUSE IS A POWERFUL MOTIVATION !

I HUNG THE PLATES ON THE WALL IN THE GARAGE WITH MY LICENSE PLATE COLLECTION .
I HAVE NOT USED THEM IN 25 YEARS NOW DESPITE BEING "PERMANENT" .
YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU MIGHT NEED THEM AGAIN .
