the prerace ceremonies at today's Coke 600 in Charlotte was exceptional .... the singers from the 82nd Airborne nailed the National Anthem as did the bagpipes playing Amazing Grace ..... its going to be a long evening .... Juan Pablo Montoya won at Indy today, must have not been any Jet Dryers on the track
I've been to 6 tracks so far, while they all have excellent pre race shows, Charlotte is head and shoulders above them.

5-26-15 .... on a personal note, we got some really good news today .... we are camped in Lexington, NC near the Richard Childress Winery on the first segment of our summer trip out west tomorrow morning we plan to drive to the winery to pick up some wine for several of my wife's relatives in South Dakota who are big NASCAR fans .... one of my wife's former student in chemistry & physics was also a high school wrestler who I took care of as the team's trainer .... he is now the chief engineer for a NASCAR team .... with us this close my wife contacted his mother who had him call us .... bottom line, we are to be at their race shop tomorrow at 4PM and he is going to take us on a personal tour ... yep, we get to tour the Stewart-Haas Racing .... while he will give us a general tour, as the chief engineer for the 10 car :D we will get to see Danica's team in action .... :salute:

in an interview following last week's race, Jimmy Johnson said for his team the only thing that counts is wins .... he's already locked into the chase and they feel free to experiment .... for a team that has made consistency its hallmark, that's a pretty big change .... for me that makes picking him iffy at best .... although they haven't shown the ability to close the deal, this week I'm picking the 78

as noted, we did have an excellent tour of SHR .... the last time I was in a race shop was back in the early '60's in Charlotte when some of us visited Fred Lorenzen's shop .... SHR has state of the art facilities .... the entire place is spotless, not a drop of grease anywhere .... they use Hendrick engines so they concentrate on the rest of the car .... my wife's former student's major job deals with everything involved with the suspension .... he runs computer simulations (which he says have evolved to the point that they are amazingly accurate) to determine if an adjustment is made/a part is changed it will affect the handling of the car .... he works directly with the Crew Chief in providing the info needed in building the car for a given track and to make adjustments during the race .... as such he's on the stand with the Crew Chief where he also monitors fuel consumption and tire wear .... when a race comes down to a fuel mileage contest he makes the suggestions to the Crew Chief as to what info should be given to the driver (Danica) .... he couldn't help but smile when he pointed out that they have never let her run out of fuel .. :)

congrats to the 48 .... this week they gambled and by staying out on old tires and won ... my girl finished 15th, one lap behind the 88 and one lap in front of the 14 .... without a late speeding on pit road penalty she would have probably done even better

JEBar,
I'm pleased to see we share the same disdain for a particular so-called
driver. As for Juan Pablo, jet dryer killer, still can't handle a Cup car, but then neither
could a couple of dirt legends. A buddy of mine is on his way to the "Dream" @ Eldora,
lucky B%#&$#@!

What's wrong with this, layout is all wrong.

Great story, thanks for sharing! So cool that you got the inside story from one of the crewmen. His job sounds very interesting.

For the suggestions to give the Crew Chief if it gets down to a fuel mileage contest, what are some of the things the Chief can say to the driver? I get that slowing down on certain parts of the track will conserve fuel, but what are some of the other things the driver can do?

slowing down is most certainly an option .... they can also lift off of the throttle a bit sooner going into a turn and hold off accelerating coming out of a turn .... some shut down their motors and coast during caution laps .... some stay in high gear and don't downshift which would keep down engine revs .... they can also move down on the track to shorten the distance
