I kind of know the flavor of that. I had the honor of installing barcode systems at Fort Lewis Washington) back in the late 80's.

If you get to work at Davis-Monthan AFB, (AZ) exchange, it's only 2hrs away, or Luke AFB 1.5hrs, let me know and we'll have dinner or something. Maybe have you over to look at the Atlantric 'plug'.

Good luck! If that's a little short I know you'll win your way thru anyway!

--by now I'm also sure you are very sober about what the mission is!--

Thanks for all the well wishes! The schedule the government wants for this project is a bit hectic so free time is sparse on the road however we do have some free days along the way.

I am sitting at BWI airport outside DC right now getting ready to board a flight home to Atlanta tonight however I head out again Sunday afternoon. Sunday 5/3 I am headed to Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, MT then Wednesday 5/6 I continue on to Joint base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, WA. Sunday 5/10 I hit the return leg of the trip by traveling to Little Rock AFB before heading home to Atlanta on Wednesday, May 13. At that point I should get about 5 days before I head out again on another journey.
Man, I loved being stationed at Malmstrom. Hey, when you get to Kirtland, I'll buy you dinner (at a decent Mexican place if you like)!

Glad to hear you're now enjoying some down time. I consulted as well as being a road warrior for several years. Major benefits - seeing new parts, meeting some great people, and banking enough that an Elio isn't a major hit to the bank account.

Next week will find me at Ft Hood in Killeen, TX. This should be a quick trip as I am currently scheduled to fly out Monday afternoon and fly home on Friday afternoon. My time at home since the last trip has been longer than I initially expected as since returning I have only been out on a quick trip to DC for meetings.

The pilot phase of the project has been extended to include at least one more base as during the initial pilot the installation teams failed to complete two out of the four bases and the two bases that were completed each took at least a day longer than was initially planned. The good news is that the government people now fully understand that their expected timetable was overly ambitious and everyone failed to account for the heightened state of alert currently in place at US military installations which has created unexpected staffing problems. We have had major issues with getting people cleared to access various bases with about 20% of the technicians being denied access when they show up at various bases despite everyone having to pass background checks, and receiving government approval, before being hired and trained.:rolleyes:

It appears that the project will continue forward with fewer teams working in parallel as it is simply costing too much money to hire people, train them, and then send them out into the field only to find out that they will not be allowed on base to perform the job. I don't exactly mind having fewer people and fewer teams as it makes the overall project easier to manage. Having a reduced number of people working on the project also means the project will take more time to complete thus I can earn more money on this project.:D

G1,

Welcome to the world of government. Sometimes, I don't know how our country will survive without it being eaten up by itself.

Unfortunately, I have wondered the same many times before.

This is not my first government project however this one does appear to have been slapped together in an even bigger rush than usual which is making things even more 'interesting'. I did however get to enjoy a good laugh when some people walked onto one of our work sites and told me; 'we're from the government and we are here to help.' :D

good to hear that things are going well and that you aren't one of the guys having trouble getting onto the bases

Thanks!. With my background, active clearance, and clean records I would normally laugh at the likelihood of being turned away at the gate however the way things have worked out so far anything is possible. Everyone working on this project must be approved by one part of the DOD however another part of the DOD refuses to tell us what we are missing or to pre-clear our people so we simply continue to fly blind and just hope that people who have already been granted access will continue to be granted access at every base they check into. o_O

Man that is just crazy... the left hand of the DOD pre-approves people, the right hand may or may not later say "hold on a minute... we can't let THAT person on a base!" Classic, typical, and I suppose not surprising.

Anyway, sounds like you are plugging along well Hector. Hopefully your association with the Elio won't get you turned away. LOL

Oh COME on, people, it's a joke!
