Somewhat Tough Questions...

So why the push to get it classified as an autocycle? Newly made standards for the autocycle will probably be the same as for cars which will be more stringent than for motorcycles. Gone are the advantages of being classified as a motorcycle. Autocycle classification is not necessary to remove helmet and motorcycle licenses requirements either. This would be a bureaucrats dream. They can strangle it with all kinds of new regulations for this new classification. I live in California and I fear this. I am ordering mine early so I can hopefully get it grandfathered in as a motorcycle before they classify them as autocycles. Also, could we still use them on the HOV lanes? The law says motorcycles can go on the HOV lanes, it does not say that autocycles can. Modifications can be made to motorcycle engines, not to auto engines that have to be smog checked every two years as is current in California. What about other states. I would like to hear other ideas on this. Thanks.

by federal laws/regs a 3 wheel vehicle is classified as a motorcycle .... so, motorcycle laws/regs apply ..... autocycle is being created as a classification within the motorcycle category .... depending on what the lawmakers want to do, it provides for exceptions for wearing helmets and/or having to have a motorcycle license endorsement .... in essence, it gives Elio some of the best features of both categories .... the fact that it is designed to meet California's automobile pollution standards without having to do so, should make some of the bureaucracy out there happy

Personally I would like to see the ELIO stay a motorcycle . Selfish reasons cheap insurance less regulation. I ride a motorcycle have for many years so it has no effect on me.
It does make sense for ELIO to get it reclassified to expand their market. I hope they get it changed.

Yes, the autocycle is a class of motorcycle.........only difference by definition is it has a steering wheel and you sit in a seat not straddle or astride it. I think they should have added enclosed cabin as some states are doing. Initially I thought it was a totally new classification of vehicle too, but it's rather a subclassification definition used for state licensing mc endorsement exemptions. A motorcycle that drives like an auto.
